Building careers by supporting early childhood teacher’s professional development.

Smart Start of Transylvania County partners with the Child Care WAGE$® Project to provide financial supplements to teachers who earn less than $15 per hour so they can attain higher education and remain in the teaching in the field of early childhood education. The project is designed to provide preschool children more stable relationships with better-educated teachers by rewarding teacher education and continuity of care.

You may qualify for a WAGE$ supplement if you are a teacher or teacher’s assistant and are currently earning at, or below, $15.00 per hour, work with children between the ages of birth-5 years old at least 10 hours per week in a licensed childcare program, and have some formal childcare credential or education beyond a high school diploma. Salary supplements are tied to the education level of the recipient and the position the recipient holds in her/his program. WAGE$ requires participants at lower education levels to move up one education level within two years (family home care providers have 3 years to move up a level) in order to continue receiving a supplement.

To participate in the project, interested childcare professionals must complete an application and provide verification of current employment in a childcare program, as well as current wages and educational credentials. New applicants should submit an official transcript or complete an Internet permission form to allow WAGE$ staff to download your grades directly from your school (if online grades are available).
